Seeking Familiarity

Keith_1

Keith came to Orangetheory (OT) knowing what HIIT (High Intensity Interval Training) was all about. He consistently worked out three to five times weekly at various gyms for nearly 10 years and discovered the benefits of HIIT. Keith joined a small group, which did HIIT and he noticed the dramatic changes in mind and body.

After the training with the group ended, he researched online what he could do to continue the same type of training. All roads led to Orangetheory.

“It is clear to me that OTF helped me get through that part of my life in the best way possible, with friends, coaches, and a kick a** workout every time.”

Keith took his first class with Coach Conner in July of 2018. “My first class was great – hard, but I pushed myself. Coach Conner had to tell me to slow down because I was in the red and that my heart rate was far too high. I loved the first class and the challenge of it,” he said. Keith described the coaches’ instruction, attitude, and encouragement as “over the top.”

250 club

As an avid fan of OT, he joined the 250 Club within 14 months averaging five classes per week. Keith has a busy schedule running three companies and has duties as the chair of the board for the Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce. The indispensable regular workouts provide him with energy and a positive sense of self, which are needed for all of his responsibilities.

Prior to Orangetheory, Keith developed cancer in 2017. After three months of healing, his motivation to keep his health at an optimal level was at an all time high. Training often at OT Orenco Station has helped him reach his goal of having the kind of body and health he wanted. Sadly, his wife also became very sick that year (passing away in 2019). “It is clear to me that OTF helped me get through that part of my life in the best way possible, with friends, coaches, and a kick a** workout every time,” said Keith.

“I am in the best shape of my life, lowest weight, lowest body fat in more than 30 years and I’ll be 60 years old this April.”

When he started OT, Keith had goals of working out three or four times a week and incorporating a clean diet. He said, “I make and eat good clean food most of the time for lunches and I have a yummy protein shake for breakfasts. I knew my body would respond if I stayed on this path and it has worked for me.” Keith’s goals now are to maintain this routine by working out every-other-day and to run some 5K races with some great OT friends in the future.

He reached a major milestone in his health when he recently had a full-body checkup. All the tests results came back good. “I am in the best shape of my life, lowest weight, lowest body fat in more than 30 years and I’ll be 60 years old this April,” said Keith.

Orangetheory offers so many different reasons why one would love the classes. Keith loves taking ESP (Endurance, Strength, Power) classes but enjoys them all because they’re never the same. The classes offered at Orenco Station give him a wide variety of times to attend with his hectic schedule. In addition, the classes give him energy throughout the day and leave him sleeping like a baby at night.

Although there are so many benefits from taking classes at Orangetheory, it’s the community he enjoys most. The unexpected benefits Keith has experienced are creating lifelong friends, meeting other business owners, and receiving referrals due to his association with OT.

“We all are there for the same thing – our health. The kind of culture when a group like this gets together is so special – encouraging, uplifting and exhilarating. The coaches are ‘A plus’ individuals and top-notch at what they do. The entire OTF experience wouldn’t be what it is if the staff wasn’t supporting all of us. And besides having a sparkling facility, the friendly greetings and helpful attitude from the second one walks through the door makes the place absolutely shine.”

Keith loves the entire package that is Orangetheory Orenco Station. The community is unlike any he has experienced within a fitness studio culture. The relationships made bring about a camaraderie shared both inside and outside of the studio. The positive attitude of everyone – especially the coaches’ encouragement – is invaluable as that motivation moves into everyone’s daily work and play lives.

He has never looked or felt this good and OT helps him be the best version of himself daily. Keep Burning Keith!

A Reason For Change

Jesse Slick_1.jpg

Change is never easy and sometimes a life-altering event forces one to start. Jesse has always had a large body his entire life and in 2012 he hit a critical mass. In a routine visit with his doctor, Jesse learned that he was two points away from having diabetes. The news scared him.

At that stage in his life, Jesse’s poor eating habits led him down a path of internal destruction with his health. He had 40 percent body fat and couldn’t bend down to tie his shoes – it was bad. He said, “I remember not being able to sit comfortably in a chair or wear clothing that fit. I was tired of being unhappy and unhealthy.”

Jesse decided to take a proactive stance in changing his health with his nutrition. He stopped eating dairy and gluten all together. Then he began to reshape his body composition in phases.

“I have changed the way I eat and now I am intentional about fueling my body for my workouts, my recovery and mind. I feel great about my food choices for the first time ever in my life.”

Jesse Slick_2.jpg

He started by losing 100 pounds, which took him three years to shed the weight. Although he lost the weight, he didn’t maintain the weight since he didn’t know how. He took two steps forward and one step back.

In 2015 he married his wife and became comfortable and complacent. Even though he stopped eating dairy and gluten, he would always find ways to eat food that wasn’t good for him. His poor eating habits slowly crept back into his life.

Fast-forward to this year, Jesse welcomed his son into the world igniting his third phase in his body composition change. I have changed the way I eat and now I am intentional about fueling my body for my workouts, my recovery and mind. I feel great about my food choices for the first time ever in my life,” said Jesse.

Jesse felt that dieting and all things related to food have consumed much of his life. He decided that he’s finished being a prisoner to his poor food choices. He wants his son to love life and to not have issues with food. As a result of Jesse’s change, he hopes to pass on his positive relationship with food to his son.

Nutrition plays a large role in changing one’s body internally. The other piece Jesse needed was the external component in the form of a workout. He took his first Orangetheory class at the Cedar Mill location at the beginning of the year. Five months later, he took another class at Orenco Station and signed up.

“I’m being intentional about my incline walking on the treadmill as well as lifting heavier on the floor. I’m putting on muscle rapidly and losing body fat monthly.”

Jesse said, “Both clubs were awesome and had a competitive atmosphere but Orenco felt alive, full of energy and enthusiasm. It was contagious…Shout-out to our coaches who bring the noise every day especially at 5 a.m. OTF provides the workouts so I don’t have to. I just show up and ball out.”

Jesse Slick_3.jpg

He works out six days a week at the studio and has Coach Chris as his mentor. Coach Chris has helped Jesse individualize his workouts within the classes he takes. “I’m being intentional about my incline walking on the treadmill as well as lifting heavier on the floor. I’m putting on muscle rapidly and losing body fat monthly,” said Jesse. Coach Persia once told him to try Orangetheory for 90 days. He’s happy to report that he has completed 88 workouts in his first three months.

Jesse enjoys the variety of classes because each class is something new. He especially enjoys strength and power classes. But, his favorite class to take is when it’s a tornado workout. He said, “I love all the splat points I get going back and forth from treads to rowers and the movement in between rows. The quick transitions only add to the competitiveness that already exists.” In addition, he loves how each coach brings their unique way of coaching and the music they play.

He also loves how the staff at the front always makes him feel welcomed because of their friendliness and kindness. Jesse has committed himself to the process and he thinks it’s safe to say that he’ll stick around to see all the continued benefits of  the Orangetheory life at Orenco Station. He iterates that he has long-term fitness goals and is happy that he gets to put in the work along with all the other members at the studio.

Keep Burning Jesse!

Resonating Words

Monica.jpg

A person can tell you many things. Sometimes you forget what they say going through one ear and out the other. However, there are times when a person will tell you something where it simply sticks and resonates with you.

In 2014, Monica’s oncologist gave her words of advice, which were so profound that she shares them with anyone who asks her. After enduring four rounds of chemotherapy, followed by six weeks of daily radiation, she wanted to take control of the cancer she had. Her doctor told her, “…keep up your healthy nutrition routine…work out as hard as you can as often you can and then do more…get seven to eight hours of sound sleep every night.”

When she completed all of her treatments in 2015, Monica asked her doctor once again what she could do to remain healthy and keep the cancer away. He asked her, “Do you remember what I told you when you started? Do those same three things forever!” Since then, Monica continued to follow his advice. Determined not to have cancer take control of her life, Monica took control of it. She began by walking the Camino, a 260 mile trek from Lyon, France to Santiago, Spain with her daughter Kelsey.

“It’s the energy of walking into a place that sparkles, welcomes, and hugs you even when you’re a ‘sweat-ball.’ It’s your new friends who text you when you’re gone from the studio for a while and they want to make sure every thing is OK.”

As she went through her treatment, she remained diligent working out three to four times a week. She tried various types of workouts ranging from Zumba to swinging kettlebells, but she couldn’t find what she wanted the most from those workouts – a community. That’s when she discovered that an Orangetheory (OT) location was opening at Orenco Station only five minutes away from her front door.

Monica_2

Monica, a little gun-shy, signed up for a membership during pre-sales. Once Orangetheory opened its doors in December of 2016, she showed up for the two-week trial period.  She said, “The first class was terrifying! I remember walking into the studio and standing, frozen, staring at the machines, TV monitors, and the orange of it all!” She had no idea of what she got herself into.

She gave herself the grace and permission to, from the start, quit if she couldn’t handle OT. Monica attended classes two to three times a week and eventually went six to seven times a week embracing the culture. Monica said, “I was hooked. Addicted. Obsessed. In Love. I found my groove – my thing.” Everyone she talks to about OT, she swears, thinks she has joined a cult.

“Just start. Just start and do not quit. Eat healthy. Sleep soundly. And, work out as hard as you can, as often as you can…and then do more.”

The community is the number one reason, which provides Monica her mojo, daily joy and her happy place. She has made so many friends and works out with people who she has come to love. Monica said, “It’s the energy of walking into a place that sparkles, welcomes, and hugs you even when you’re a ‘sweat-ball.’ It’s your new friends who text you when you’re gone from the studio for a while and they want to make sure every thing is OK.” She also landed a new career working with 401(k) accounts from her friend, Milauana, who she befriended by attending classes at the studio.

IMG_11972016-01-14 08.59.372016-04-24 19.43.47

It didn’t take long for her to realize that OT wasn’t all about the equipment and tech, but more about the coaches and how they coached her every step of the way since day one. “They were patient and yet they pushed me. They watched me, and they coached me. I have learned how to row, how to run, how to lift correctly, and how to modify when I need to,” said Monica. She has observed each and every one of the coaches and seen how magnificently they’ve grown individually. Each coach has blossomed into a leader, mentor and a good friend to all – this is why she doesn’t quit.

Monica appreciates how the coaches don’t quit. The coaches show up for special workshops occasionally on Sundays after normal hours of operation. They take the time between classes giving advice and tips to help members with any problems or questions. Coaches provide a contagious energy beginning with high-fives at the start of class to celebrating milestones of any member during and after class.

Since she has joined the Orangetheory family at Orenco Station, Monica has seen real results in many ways. She feels great loaded with vast amounts of energy especially after an early morning strength-day workout. The euphoria from finishing a class empowers her to tackle the day with confidence and power.

Monica_3.jpg

She definitely feels the strength she has gained in her muscles in the past two years. Monica lifts heavier now because the coaches know she can and encourages her to do so. She loves how she doesn’t bat an eyelash now when she adds more weight or making the TRX strap exercises a little more challenging.

Monica’s healthy habits and diligence has rubbed off on her kids and they’ve followed suit. Her daughter Kelsey wants to open an Orangetheory in Vienna, Austria so she can take classes every day. She and Kelsey plan to walk the next Camino – the Portuguese Camino – in 2020. Her sons also send photos of healthy meal prepped foods for the week too.

When people ask her how she stays in shape and how she has so much energy, she tells them, “Just start. Just start and do not quit. Eat healthy. Sleep soundly. And, work out as hard as you can, as often as you can…and then do more.” This advice stuck with Monica and has worked for her – it can work for you too.

Keep Burning Monica!

The Results Speak For Itself

Greg Chang

Most people during their lunch hour look forward to grabbing a bite to eat with friends or co-workers. Not Greg though…he comes to train at the studio working towards his fitness goals.

Prior to joining the Orangetheory (OT) family at Orenco Station, Greg worked out on his own and with a personal trainer to improve his health. After having a physical, Greg learned that he needed to lower his A1C number (blood sugar level) from 6.1 to a level within a normal range of 4 – 5.6 percent. If he didn’t try to take control of his health, Greg would eventually become a diabetic.

No matter what Greg did to improve his condition, nothing helped. He kept on yo-yoing and thought he’d give OT a try. He felt hesitant to join at first, but after joining and attending classes for a period of time and seeing his A1C number drop to 5.9 percent at his next physical, Greg was sold on OT. He stopped with his personal trainer and trained at OT exclusively.

“I enjoy the variety of workouts and know that each class will be different. The coaches are great as well as the staff and it’s great to hear encouraging words coming from them.”

Greg Chang_3

Greg had a brutal first class as he climbed Orange Everest having his rear kicked in the process. Many members know how difficult that climb can be even for the seasoned OT member, but he persevered. He thanks Coach Persia for coaching him in his first class and AmyJae for reeling him in to join.

When he started OT, Greg wanted to simply survive classes and improve his cardio as his starting goals. He now wants to continue down the path of wellness in all aspects of his life from being there for his family to enjoying life to its fullest.

The primary force, which drives Greg to attend classes as often as he does, is his addiction to Orangetheory.

“I didn’t realize how addictive OTF is and the friendships I’ve made. OTF is not just a place to work out and classes to take, but rather, it’s a community and now an extension of my life. From the members to the staff and coaches, they have welcomed me into their lives and coming to class is not a chore but a privilege to be around great folks that push and motivate me,” said Greg.

Greg Chang_2

“The only thing I can say is thank you OTF for being who you are.”

Greg has trained here for nearly a year now and has reached many milestones along the way. Since joining, he no longer has to take medication for high cholesterol and hypertension. He has one medication left, which he also wants to no longer take – this would be the biggest accomplishment for him – and to be med free.

In regard to classes, he said, “I enjoy the variety of workouts and know that each class will be different. The coaches are great as well as the staff and it’s great to hear encouraging words coming from them.” Greg added that Kim, Nick and Royal are great additions to the coaching staff.

Greg loves everything about Orangetheory from endurance classes to the community – the members are welcoming and non-judgmental towards anyone regardless of how long they’ve trained here for. “The only thing I can say is thank you OTF for being who you are,” said Greg.

Keep Burning Greg.

Living a Long and Healthy Life

Joe and Valeria_1

When Joe moved to Oregon, Joe wanted to find a gym or studio to work out at. Joe stumbled upon Orangetheory Fitness (OTF) while it was under construction. He met Persia at the time and thought of OTF as an interesting concept and wanted to give it a try.

Joe remembers feeling nervous for his first class. After a few 5 a.m. classes, he was hooked. Valeria felt a little intimidated about her first class and didn’t join right away like Joe, but eventually gave OTF a shot a few months later and joined. Both enjoyed and felt great after their first workouts.

“I dropped to 180 pounds and reached 14 percent body fat. I did it through constantly coming to OTF and eating healthy” — Joe.

The couple attends class frequently and burns to stay in mental and physical shape. Joe hit the ground running by participating in the Weight Loss Challenge, Peak Weak and Dri-Tri. “I am entering my 40s and I want to stay healthy by using proper diet and getting plenty of exercise. I want to ensure I live a long life,” said Joe.

Joe and Valeria_2

Both had specific goals for themselves when they joined OTF. Valeria had the goals of consistently feeling strong and maintaining her stress levels. Joe, on the other hand, wanted to lose fat and drop his weight down to 190 pounds.

Since joining the OTF family, both have reached milestones for themselves. Valeria couldn’t run for long periods at a time when she began. She stated, “OTF had been the best thing for me. I was never able to run for more than a minute and can now easily run during classes. I feel much stronger than ever after joining OTF.”

Joe came in second in last year’s Weight Loss Challenge and competed in two Dri-Tris. “I dropped to 180 pounds and reached 14 percent body fat. I did it through constantly coming to OTF and eating healthy,” said Joe.

Although they’ve both reached their goals, their new goals don’t differ much from their original goals. Joe wants to maintain between 10 – 14 percent body fat and gain more strength. Valeria wants to continue to build muscle mass. She said, “I have two beautiful babies and do not seek body perfection. My goal is to feel good about my body just the way it is.”

“I want to thank everyone at OTF for doing what you do. You inspire me and motivate me. Thank you for being you”– Valeria.

Both love attending classes at the studio because of the coaches and the challenges each class presents. Valeria loves the front desk staff and all the coaches especially AJ, Shay and Persia because of their inspiration and dedication. She loves the flexibility of the class schedule and how she feels after completing a workout.

Joe loves the fact that he can utilize OTF anywhere in the nation and around the world. He has visited locations in Seattle, Redmond, Lexington and other locations, which works well with his job travels.

The two of them love everything about OTF from the events to the 90-minute class. Every time they take class at the studio, both of them always feel welcomed by the friendly community because of its positive energy and support. “I want to thank everyone at OTF for doing what you do. You inspire me and motivate me. Thank you for being you,” said Valeria. Thanks for being part of our community!

Keep Burning Joe and Valeria.
